The prospect of stripping away years of skin damage in a non-invasive, virtually painless way is universally appealing. That’s why chemical peels are so popular for treating signs of skin aging. “Peels remove all that dry, dull debris and reveal the softer, smoother skin underneath,” says Charmaine Cooper, Education Manager for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. “In as few as three treatments, peels can reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines, smooth skin texture and even reduce the appearance of breakouts.”

But what about the downtime? With today’s innovative technology, we’re happy to report that the latest peels result in little to no downtime at all! They’re also far more powerful.

Professional chemical peels are applied by skin therapists, estheticians or medical practitioners who use highly concentrated exfoliants. Chemical peels can be performed as outpatient procedures, but they tend to result in noticeable skin flaking, peeling or downtime, depending on the strength of the peel. To minimize downtime, and deliver the best results, a series of peels are usually performed over a six- to 12-week period, followed by maintenance twice a year.

Lactic acid is derived from sour milk. It’s an alpha hydroxy acid like glycolic acid, but is much gentler and helps the skin maintain its ideal PH factor. Lactic acid peels help to remove germs, dead cells and toxins from the skin. People who have them done often report that their skin feels much smoother and looks more toned than before. Lactic acid peels are best for people who have very sensitive skin that might not be able to tolerate the slightly more intense glycolic acid peels. Although lactic acid peels are gentler, they usually provide many of the same benefits as the other peels, but in a less intense version.

Glycolic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy family of natural ingredients. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and is essentially a fruit acid. It is applied to the skin and can be found in concentrations that range from very low (such as 3%) up to much higher concentrations as prescribed by our skin specialists. Glycolic acid peels are applied for a variety of reasons relating to anti-aging to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and to make the skin look smoother, tighter and younger looking overall. It is also used as an acne treatment.

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. Derived from bitter almonds, it has many benefits for the skin. Mandelic peels are less penetrating and irritating, but still very effective for treating damaged skin. Their antibacterial qualities also make them good for people with acne-prone skin. Because it is one of the gentler chemical peels, it is safe to use for people with rosacea or darker skin tones. Mandelic acid peels will improve your skin faster than using a daily AHA treatment.

Pyruvic acid is present in nature in fermented fruit, apples, vinegar and is alpha-keto-acid which is applied as a medium chemical peeling agent for inflammatory acne, moderate acne scars, greasy skin, actinic keratosis, and warts. The results are an increase in the thickness of the epidermis and dermis which stimulate the growth of new collagen and elastic fibres in the dermal layer of the skin, so that, over a period the skin surface begins to look younger and smoother.

Salicylic acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid that is effective in treating oily skin, clogged pores and seborrheic dermatitis. Salicylic acid peels work well for those that have sun damaged skin, dull and lifeless skin, sensitive skin, dry or dehydrated skin, and uneven skin tones. Salicylic acid peels treatment is ideal for skin conditions with acne, ingrown hairs, wrinkles and fine lines, and psoriasis.
